Do you struggle to get your child to read?
Engaging Reluctant Readers:
A guide to conquering reading challenges!
In this instalment of the Parent’s Power Hour, we look in to how you can transform reading time so that your child is engaged and enthusiastic throughout! If trying to get your child to read to you is a constant struggle, with them dragging their feet, or just looking at you blankly when you ask them to read, this is the masterclass for you.
We’ll cover 3 main areas:
- Small tweaks you can make to your child’s reading environment so that it’s comforting and supportive, helping your child feel more confident when they make mistakes.
- Activities to try before your child even opens their book to help raise engagement and get your child intrigued and wanting to find out more.
- Simple activities you can use when your child starts to lose focus that will help them get back on track, and improve their deeper understanding of the book too!
We’ll also go over some of the signs of reluctance and the most common causes of these, as well as when to be concerned about Dyslexia and what you can do if you are worried.
As a bonus, if you join this masterclass, you’ll get a free resource, full of questions you can ask your child to help them engage more fully with the book, and develop their comprehension skills too! All questions are separated into stages of development to make it easy for you to work out which ones to try!
Raise the value of reading
I’ll show you how you can raise the value of reading in your home, so your child sees it as something important, not just to you, but to them too. They’ll understand why it’s so important to read, how reading has an effect on our everyday lives and how reading can open doors they didn’t even know were there. This will help them stay resilient when they find reading hard, and keep them engaged, even when they’d rather be doing something else!
Bond, Laugh, Explore
In the second section of this masterclass, we’ll dive in to how you can make reading interactive and keep your child engaged throughout, helping you to stop the reluctance before it even has a chance to start and building excitement for every reading session you do. Following these steps will help your child look forward to reading, and be excited to explore a new book with you.
Beyond Reading
Finally, we’ll look at quick and easy activities you can do when your child starts to get fidgety while they’re reading. These 30 second brain breaks give your child a chance to rest and refocus, while still building important reading skills. We’ll go over questions you can ask to raise their engagement and develop critical thinking skills, as well as activities to build their vocabulary and awareness of repeated words. Using these strategies will not only keep your child focused on the book and what they’re learning, but also deepen their learning, making reading easier for them each and every time they sit down.
