On Thursday 12th September at 8pm (BST) I’m running a FREE masterclass on how to support your child with the biggest roadblock they’ll face in their reading. (Suitable for ages 4-7)

Year 1 is where most kids hit their first reading roadblock.
In Reception, the focus is on short, 3-sound words (like cat/bag/pop). These are short and easy to read, even when you include all the digraphs and trigraphs. Most of our kids are able to put these 3 sounds together to read words relatively confidently by the start of Year 1 (though if this is something your little one finds tricky, check out my ‘Blending Skills Masterclass‘ which covers the basics).
Year 1 is different, however. The amount of progress your child will make this year is huge. You’ll see them go from reading a few words here and there to reading whole books confidently! It’s one of the reasons Year 1 will always be my favourite year to work with.
Unfortunately, this progress also comes with a few difficulties.
Even kids who were confident in Reception can have a wobble at the start of Year 1 when they come across harder words, particularly words with adjacent consonants or more than one syllable.
This masterclass will address just that, as well as giving you loads of games and ideas to support your little ones, helping to set them up for the Phonics Screen Check at the end of the year, and giving them confidence as they face this tricky stage!

In the decade that I’ve been teaching, difficulty with blending longer words has come up again and again. It’s a difficult roadblock to solve in school, but surprisingly easy to do at home (mostly because doing something for shorter amounts of time, but more often, is – and has repeatedly been proven to be – a better way to learn!).
In this masterclass, I’ll show you the activities and strategies I’ve used in my classroom, with my 1:1 students, and that I’ve given to many parents over the years. These strategies will have a huge impact on your child’s reading and the best part is your child won’t even know they’re learning.

During this live session, you’ll also have the chance to ask any questions you might come up with, and get almost instantaneous answers. There’ll also be time afterwards to ask more general questions about your child’s reading and get support specific to you.
Buy your ticket now to know exactly how to support your child with their next steps.
