Make sure your child is…
It’s your child’s first day of school. They wake up, excited and ready to go. The morning is calm and easy, as you got everything ready the night before and your child is already settled in to the school routine.
When you get to the school, they’re happy and confident, saying ‘hello’ to their new teacher. With a quick hug and a kiss, they’re off, into their new classroom, waving at you as they go.
You can see from the door that they’re already talking to their classmates, making friends and settling in.
They’re ready for school, and they’re so excited to be going.
(It’s completely okay if you go and have a little cry after saying goodbye. Everyone secretly does…)
Your child is happy, confident, and prepared for school, and while you might be a little bit sad, you also know that it’s because of you.
As a parent, you want nothing more than to ensure that your little one is confident and fully prepared to start school. You understand the importance of equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in this new chapter of their lives.
That’s why I’m so excited to introduce you to Ready for Reception, a mini-course covering every aspect of starting school, and a load of extra goodies too.
This mini-course is designed to guide you every step of the way in preparing your child for school. With practical tips, fun activities, and a focus on your child’s wellbeing, I’ll help you build a strong foundation for your child’s education. Together, we’ll embark on this exciting journey and give your child the best start possible.
I have spent years watching parents worry their child is not ready for school, that they won’t be happy, that they’ll be behind their peers and find it hard to catch up.
Parents who are so concerned that their child won’t make friends, that they’ll be lonely, that they’ll find it hard to settle.
Parents who just want their child to have a good first experience of school, to be enthusiastic to go in, and to be engaged and enjoying it from their very first day, throughout the whole year.
I wanted to create a comprehensive resource that would empower parents like you to prepare your child for this big step in their life. I wanted parents to feel calm and confident about sending their little ones off to school for the first time.
From practical advice on ensuring you have everything ready for the first day, to activities that foster social and emotional development to ensure your child makes friends confidently, we cover it all.
I want you to know that you are not alone in this journey. Ready for Reception is designed to be your go-to support system, offering Q&A sessions every other week, where you can ask any burning questions you may have and a community you can turn to for guidance. I created this space for us to come together and support one another, alongside insights, tips and strategies to ensure your child thrives in school.
As parents, we all want the best for our children, and I am here to cheer you on every step of the way. With Ready for Reception, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to navigate this exciting chapter in your child’s life.

We’ll also cover the curriculum and the Reception Baseline Assessment so you feel confident that you understand exactly what your child will be learning.
I’ll give you specific pointers and ideas for how you can help make the transition to school as simple and easy as possible, for both you and your child.
We’ll go over the basics of what your child needs to know, and a few other things that will help them feel confident and independent on during those first few days including how to support them to make friends in those first few days. We’ll also cover some activities to make practising these things fun and engaging!
We’ll dive a bit deeper into the other things you can do to ensure your child thrives at school. These aren’t things your child has to know, but they can certainly help your child to start school strong!

I’m Jen, a Primary School teacher, Dyslexia tutor and parent support coach. I’ve been a teacher for nearly a decade and have taught Nursery, Reception and KS1 (as well as a few other ages too!). I’ve helped hundreds of children settle in to school, and supported parents to make the transition as calm, easy and enjoyable as possible.
I know how nerve-wracking it can be to send your child to school for the first time, and I want to help as many parents as possible feel prepared and ready to do so, so that when your child waves goodbye to you and heads into class, you feel confident that they’re ready.
The activities, advice and support in this course are the ones I’ve given to so many parents over the years, to help their child prepare for school and settle in confidently. I look forward to supporting you and your family too!

Within the course we discuss several ways to enable your child to make friends at school, and reinforce their social and emotional development so they start school happy and confident. We’ll talk about how you can support your child at home throughout those first few weeks, as well as what to do if you do have concerns.
Absolutely! All the games, activities and advice apply to all children starting school, no matter where you are in the world. There may be the occasional reference to the UK schooling system, and the section on curriculum may not be relevant to you, but the content applies, wherever you are!
Together, we will focus on building your child’s independence in a variety of ways, from self care to social skills. By enabling your child to have a firm foundation in all areas of the EYFS curriculum, they will be more prepared for school and so feel more confident with any challenges they face. We will also discuss ways to support your child’s mental health throughout the transition to school.
The activities included within Ready for Reception can be adapted to every ability level. While some children may find some aspects more challenging, there is something there for everyone.
The topics I cover within the course are suited for all ability ranges, however, if your child has additional needs, I strongly advise you speak to the school to ensure there is provision in place for your child to enable them to settle easily. You may need additional support, beyond what this course and the bonus content can offer.
The mini-course will typically take less than 2 hours to complete. The activity pack that is included is designed to be flicked through to find whatever you’re looking for quickly. It’s hard to say exactly how long it will take your child to complete it as every time you play a game, your child will get better at the skill it focuses on, so there is no particular ‘end point’. You can keep using it again and again. These games can be adapted for older children as well, so your child can keep playing them for years to come.
As soon as you join Ready for Reception, you will receive a link to join a private Facebook group, where you can join a community of like-minded parents. I’m very active in the group, so you will continue to get support right up until your child starts school (and for a bit after that too!). The group will then stay open so you can keep in contact as your children go through their first year.
As this is a new course that I created specifically at the request of my Facebook group, I have not yet got any testimonials for this course. As soon as I get some, I will absolutely be including them!
I do, however, have many testimonials from previous courses. I’ll include a few here –
“Jen is so knowledgeable when it comes to phonics and reading. Her raising a reader masterclass is so informative. I highly recommend parents listen to it. She goes into detail on how to incorporate reading into your routine while making it fun. I have taken away many ideas on how I can continue to encourage my young children as well as my older boys to read and love reading. I as a teacher have gained such an insight into how I can incorporate enjoyable reading experiences into my classroom. Thank you for this amazing resource, Jen.” – Karly (teacher and mum to 4)
“Jen has been a huge help for my daughters reading. Provided me with amazing ideas and resources along with some great advice! She is a lovely lady who shows a genuine interest in your child’s learning. Highly recommend!” – Nads
“Jen is amazing !! Always there for help and explains everything so well . She has some fantastic ideas to help with children’s education. So glad I found Jen as she’s made me feel confident in helping my son learn at home.” – Heidi
