If you want something a little bit different to the normal chocolate advent calendar, check this out!
I was looking over Sainsbury’s selection of advent calendars recently and thinking that, while I love them, you could get so much more from it… I’d love an advent calendar I could do with my kids, both at home and in my classroom that would actually benefit them. So I created it!
I’ve created 25 video lessons (with daily activity packs too), that focus on building reading, writing and comprehension skills.
Each day, I’ll model how to read a Christmas-themed word, building it up day by day so that by Christmas, your child can recognise loads of words you tend to find in books, on telly and around the world at this time of year. I’ve also added some suggestions for games that use what your child has learned, so they can show off and join in!!
(Watch the example of one of the more simple sessions below…)
Once we’ve practised our reading, I’ll walk you and your child through the main task, whether that’s comprehension, writing or something creative that you can display in your house! All the activities can be found in the booklet to print off and use, or I give suggestions for how you can create it yourself if you don’t want to print.
Over the course of December, we build up your child’s skills in ways that feel more like playing instead of learning, including several ways you can adapt the activities to suit both older and younger children, so every member of the family can get involved (I’ve tried these out with kids aged 3-10, and they loved them!)
These activities will help to keep your child entertained, enthusiastic and learning on the lead up to Christmas with activities you can continue to use long after the holiday has ended.
And it’s all online, so no waiting to get access!
Here’s a sneak peak at the Raising Readers Advent Calendar Videos:
A Daily Activity Book
Each day will have the activity pack attached for you to download and use. You’ll also get an email with the entire activity pack for all 25 days as soon as you complete your purchase, so that you can look through it and make sure you’re prepared for what’s to come!
A Daily Phonics lesson
A video session to watch with your kids that will explain what you’re doing and how to get the most out of it. I’ll show you how to read the words with your children, every step for each activity, and how to get the most out of the writing tasks too. Take a look at this sneak peak to see what I mean:
Templates, worksheets and more…
Reading, writing and creative activities, including templates and printable sheets that make it easy for you to download and do it at home.
Each day, we will do a mini phonics lesson, focused on teaching (or revising) sounds to your child, and helping them to blend them together. Each word is Christmas themed so your child is likely to see it regularly over the next month, and be able to practise reading it. By the time we reach Christmas, the aim is for your child to able to recognise the words in a book, a sign, or anywhere!
As well as reading, this Advent Calendar focuses on encouraging your child to follow instructions, develop their creativity, improve their fine motor control (for writing), and support their writing skills as well. There’s also the opportunity to work on your child’s ability to reflect and their self-confidence too!
Each day’s video is between 3 and 12 minutes long. If that’s all you have time for, fantastic! Your child will still learn loads, including working on reading that day’s word and watching the instructions for that day’s activity.
If you have more time that day, the activities can last for as long as you want. I show you exactly how to complete each task, and how to extend it, so you might choose just to make something that day, or to do some writing, or to do everything and a challenge activity too!
As soon as you purchase the Raising Readers Advent Calendar, you’ll be invited to join our private Facebook group where you can ask any questions (anonymously if you prefer!) and get support, both from me directly, and from other parents also participating. It’s also a great space to show off what your child has done!
The activity book will be sent to you in an email (please check your spam folder), as well as being available to download from the Facebook group, and in the thank you page directly after you click buy.
