Engaging Reluctant Readers

A guide to conquering reading challenges

When your child is reluctant to read with you, it can be incredibly stressful. You know that the only way they’ll get better at reading is to practise, but getting them to do so feels like an uphill struggle.

In the Engaging Reluctant Readers masterclass, I’ll go through proven strategies to reengage your child, helping them to enjoy the time they spend reading with you, and improving their skills too.

What I show you in this masterclass are the exact activities and strategies I use in my classroom and during my 1:1 tutoring sessions that have enabled children to find enjoyment from reading, over and over again.

but wait...

What do we cover in the Engaging Reluctant Readers masterclass?

We’ll start by diving in to what most often makes a child reluctant, including some of the challenges your child might be facing that’s leading to them not wanting to read. We’ll talk about how reluctance presents itself and what you can do to change that.

We’ll then cover 3 main areas to help your child go from reluctant to engaged:

Raise the value of reading

I’ll show you how you can raise the value of reading in your home, so your child sees it as something important, not just to you, but to them too. They’ll understand why it’s so important to read, how reading has an effect on our everyday lives and how reading can open doors they didn’t even know were there. This will help them stay resilient when they find reading hard, and keep them engaged, even when they’d rather be doing something else!

Bond, Laugh and Explore

In the second section of this masterclass, we’ll dive in to how you can make reading interactive and keep your child engaged throughout, helping you to stop the reluctance before it even has a chance to start and building excitement for every reading session you do. Following these steps will help your child look forward to reading, and be excited to explore a new book with you.

Beyond Reading

Finally, we’ll look at quick and easy activities you can do when your child starts to get fidgety while they’re reading. These 30 second brain breaks give your child a chance to rest and refocus, while still building important reading skills. We’ll go over questions you can ask to raise their engagement and develop critical thinking skills, as well as activities to build their vocabulary and awareness of repeated words. Using these strategies will not only keep your child focused on the book and what they’re learning, but also deepen their learning, making reading easier for them each and every time they sit down.

Together, these features create a powerful toolkit that helps parents turn their child’s reading reluctance into excitement, setting them up for success in school and beyond.

Meet Jen!

When a child learns to read, the whole world opens up to them. Not only do they have the ability to do necessary things, like read street names and bus timetables, but they can also explore any topic that interests them, learning so much more than they otherwise would. Reading gives children independence, and every child deserves to become a confident reader.

I’m Jen, a Primary School teacher, Dyslexia tutor and parent support coach. I have a specialism in Early Reading and Phonics and focus on supporting parents with their children at home. As well as spending many years teaching children both in the classroom and as a specialist tutor, I have made it a priority to support parents through courses, workshops and individual sessions.

Over the last decade, I’ve helped so many parents to find their confidence when supporting their children, whether they’re just beginning their education or needing more support later on. My mission is to support you with your child’s education and show you how it can be simple and easy to support them at home
