The 6 Steps to Reading
Workbook

Everything you need to get the absolute most out of this week!

All of these activities and resources are additional to what I’ll share throughout the week.

Not only are they great as quick activities to improve your child’s reading, but will give you extra information for the three core sessions this week.

Reasons to get this activity pack:

Your child is learning to read and you want to boost their progress at home.

You want to get the most out of this Challenge Week so you can keep supporting your child long after it’s over.

You want to build your child’s confidence so they’re ready for their next reading challenge.

You want some fun, easy, resources and resource-free activities to do with your child over the summer.

The 6 Steps Workbook is your answer to all of these.

I’ve put together a comprehensive pact to support your child throughout this challenge week and beyond. Let’s run through each section quickly:

Book bands and levels –

  • A quick assessment of your child’s current reading skills
  • An explanation of what each level focuses on
  • How to support your child at each level
  • The conversion between Oxford Reading Tree book colours and levels and Read Write Inc levels

Engaging Reluctant Readers –

  • How to tell if your child is reluctant
  • Some possible causes of reluctance
  • Games and activities to help them refocus while reading
  • A page to record your notes from the Bonus Session
  • A Reading Tracker to help you see what your child has achieved and see what works

6 Steps to Reading –

  • 17 games and activities (at least 2 per step) for you to do with your child that will help them in all 6 areas of reading.
  • Video explanations for every game, including how to adapt them for different ages
  • An at-a-glance explanation of each Pillar so you know how it supports your child.
  • A small notes section for you to use during the masterclass
  • The core assessment we use within the Raising Readers Community to identify our children’s strengths and any gaps they may have, with a video walkthrough on how to complete it

Whether your child is just starting on their reading journey, or further along, this pack contains everything you need to get even more out of this week and know exactly how to support them, every step of the way.

Each activity comes with a clear explanation of how to play, and how it’s helping your child maintain their reading progress, while still being active and involving! I’ve also included a few other resources for even more ideas on how to engage your child with reading at home.

FAQs

This workbook is designed to support the 6 Steps to Reading Challenge week, so is best suited to kids between the ages of 2 and 8 (or from preschool to Year 2). Some activities will be better suited to some age groups, but I’ve made sure to include lots of activities for all ages and video support to help you adapt them to suit your kids. Many of the activities can be played with kids beyond Year 2, so you can keep using them for years to come!

While the workbook is designed to be used alongside the Challenge week, there’s loads of information inside that you can continue to use well into the future. You can keep coming back to the book band descriptions as your child makes progress with their reading, so you can ensure they’re on the correct level. Every time your child is reluctant to read, you can check out the quick activities to try (I’ve used many of them with kids in Years 5 and 6!). The activities and assessments for the 6 steps to reading can be used over and over agin, well into the future. Every time you play a game, your child will get better at the skill it focuses on, so there is no ‘end point’ to the workbook. You can keep using it again and again.

Reach out! I’m very happy to help with any questions and would be delighted to support you with your child’s reading.

I currently offer a free, private 1:1 session for every parent where we dive in to your concerns and queries about your child’s reading.

We’ll work together to assess your child against the 6 steps for reading (using the assessment booklet that’s included in this workbook), work out where their reading roadblocks are (if there are any!) and discuss what they need to do to reach the next step. We’ll talk about what you can reasonably fit into your lifestyle and I’ll give you a series of games and activities that suit you and your child.

We’ll then work together to discuss how you can fit these activities into your day-to-day life to ensure your child makes amazing progress, quickly!

But wait, who am I?
How do I know this will help?

I’m Jen, a Primary School teacher, Dyslexia tutor and parent support coach. I’ve been a teacher for nearly a decade and have taught Nursery, Reception and KS1 (as well as a few other ages too!). I’ve taught hundreds of children to read, and I’m passionate about supporting parents to do the same.

We all know that our kids learn best when they’re having fun, and we also know that reading is one of the most important things our kids will ever learn. That’s why I’ve put together this pack of games that will help your children make progress with their reading, whilst also being active and enjoying themselves.

If you want to make sure your child keeps making progress over the summer, or you just want some activities that you can do together, this pack is full of ideas that will help!
