Before ABC – Ensure your child has the best possible start

Helping you help your children

Learning to read is the most important thing your child will do. It opens the door to their independence. I’m passionate about helping parents build this skill in their children and supporting them every step of the way.

Learning to read starts before you think it does!

A child can’t walk before they can stand.

Do you want to teach your child to read but don’t know where (or when) to start?

Are you trying to teach your little one letters, and while they’re remembering them fine, they’re struggling with putting them together?

Maybe you, or someone in your family has dyslexia and you’re worried that your little one will struggle as you did? (As a dyslexic myself, I fully understand the feeling!)

The truth is that reading starts before we learn letters and words. By ensuring our children have the skills for reading, we can help them overcome barriers and become confident readers for the rest of their lives (yes, even if they have dyslexia).

In my career as an early years and primary teacher, I have seen so many children who’s parents are trying their best, trying to help their children at home, practising letters over and over again and not finding their child is making much progress. Their child recognises letters (though they may confuse some occasionally), but when it comes to reading them in a book, they get frustrated and struggle to blend the letters together to make sense of the words.

Over the years, I’ve helped many parents understand their child’s barriers and find ways to overcome them, making reading easy and enjoyable again. I’ve run workshops, intervention sessions, ‘homework’ classes and parenting sessions, all aimed at teaching parents how their children are educated and giving them the skills to continue their learning at home. Now I want to give you the same thing, in the comfort of your own home, at a time that works for you.

When a child is learning to read, they need to be confident in three things:

  1. Identifying and using sounds.
  2. Joining in with songs and stories.
  3. Understanding stories and asking questions.

In my short course, I can help you encourage your child to develop these skills through exploration, imagination, perseverance, comprehension and most importantly PLAY!

All of these will give your child the building blocks upon which phonetical understanding and reading fluency is built. So how are we to support our children to get there?

There are many courses out there teaching children to read. But so many of them miss the most important step.

A child can’t walk before they can stand.

Learning to read needs a firm foundation too!

I can teach you how to help them develop skills that will give them that foundation, helping them to explore the world around them, comprehend how sounds fit together to make words and persevere when they get stuck, whilst fitting it into their play so that they don’t even realise they are learning!

When they are confident in their understanding of sounds, reading will be as easy as ABC!

You helped them with their first steps.

Now you can help them with their first steps towards reading.

Here's how it all breaks down:

STEP 1: Learn

Understand the 3 main areas of learning that happen before your child is ‘ready to read’ and how to support your child to develop each of them. Learn how to integrate this learning into your everyday lives, making learning fun and engaging for your child without adding hours of preparation to your timetable.

STEP 2: Comprehend

This is the fun part! Explore how to implement your child’s learning in their reading. Introduce them to books in a way that takes the pressure off both of you and encourages them naturally to join in and show off their skills.

STEP 3: Apply

Work out how to fit the learning into your (and your child’s) day in many different ways that require no more than 10 minutes of your time. Understand the different levels of reading and how to assess where your child is against these levels. Gain confidence that you know where your child is in their learning journey.

Meet your coach:

I’m Jen, a primary school teacher who specialises in Early Reading and Phonics.

I am passionate about reading and truly believe it is the gateway to all future learning. I know that enabling a child to read is the most important thing I do as a teacher and I love that moment when a child realises they ‘can’ read and suddenly goes from struggling to loving reading.

Those formative stages of reading are so important, when a child is exploring the world around them and developing skills that will set them up for the rest of their lives. I have spent years supporting children with their development and talking to parents about how to scaffold their children’s learning at home.

Over the years I have lead many parent workshops and groups focusing on teaching parents how to support their children. I love giving parents the skills they need to support their children in their learning and demystifying the methods we use in education to ensure that every child gets the best possible start.

With Before ABC I have created the course I wish I could have given to the parents in my very first class.
