Helping you help your children

Learning to read is the most important thing your child will do. It opens the door to their independence. I’m passionate about helping parents build this skill in their children and supporting them every step of the way.

Help your child learn to read.

When I first started teaching, as an Early Years teacher in East London, the question I was asked most often – after “Is my child settling in alright?” – was “How can I help my child?” I completely understood the feeling. Your little one has just started school, and you’re no longer completely aware of everything they’re doing. It can be a really hard time for both parents and children, particularly if it’s the first time they’ve ever been away from you. It’s even harder when they come home talking about things that you didn’t do at school. Things like reading with Phonics.

Phonics isn’t something we were taught as kids (the government brought it in to schools in 2013. I didn’t learn how different letters can combine to make different sounds until I became a teacher.) and the information on the internet either tells you nothing other than ‘read with them’, or is too complex, with lots of ‘teacher speak’ and no clear instructions for how to support your own child.

I’ve often found that parents really want to help their kids, but don’t know how. I want to change that.

You helped them with their first steps.

Now you can help them with their first steps towards reading.

I spoke to Jen about my daughter’s reading and about how progression works for phonics schemes. She gave me a lot of useful information and reassurance. We also discussed a couple of other topics, including parent reading – I have a few new ideas to try with the children I read to. I found the session really helpful. Jen is clearly passionate about helping children and helping parents to help their children. I also received a comprehensive follow up email. 5 stars, I will recommend to others.

Meet Jen:

I’m Jen, a primary school teacher who specialises in Early Reading and Phonics.

I am passionate about reading and truly believe it is the gateway to all future learning. I know that enabling a child to read is the most important thing I do as a teacher and I love that moment when a child realises they ‘can’ read and suddenly goes from struggling to loving reading.

Those formative stages of reading are so important, when a child is exploring the world around them and developing skills that will set them up for the rest of their lives. I have spent years supporting children with their development and talking to parents about how to scaffold their children’s learning at home.

Over the years I have lead many parent workshops and groups focusing on teaching parents how to support their children. I love giving parents the skills they need to support their children in their learning and demystifying the methods we use in education to ensure that every child gets the best possible start.

My mission is to give every parent the support they need to help their child.
